GMX V1 Exploit on Arbitrum: Root Cause and Next Steps On 9 July 2025 at 12:30 PM UTC, the GMX V1 deployment on Arbitrum suffered a ~$40 million exploit. The exploit transaction: https://arbiscan.io/tx/0x03182d3f0956a91c4e4c8f225bbc7975f9434fab042228c7acdc5ec9a32626ef. Root Cause Based on a review of the incident by contributors, auditors and security researchers, the root cause of the exploit is a re-entrancy attack. The entry point of the attack was https://github.com/gmx-io/gmx-contracts/blob/master/contracts/core/OrderBook.sol#L764. While this function has the nonReentrant modifier to guard against re-entrancy, this only prevents re-entrancy for functions in the same contract, which is within the OrderBook contract. The attacker made use of this re-entrancy to directly call increasePosition in the Vault contract. Under regular operation, the increasePosition function in the Vault contract can only be called by the PositionRouter and PositionManager contracts. The PositionRouter and PositionManager contracts are needed to ensure that the average short price is properly calculated. The price of GLP is dependent on the pending PnL, which is calculated based on the average short price. By utilising this re-entrancy and bypassing the average short price calculations, the attacker was able to open positions and manipulate the average short price for BTC downwards from the initial value of $109,505.77 to $1,913.70. The attacker then used a flash loan to: 1. Purchase GLP at the fair price of $1.45 2. Open a large position of size $15,385,676 Due to the manipulated average short price, the short losses were calculated as 15,385,676 * (1913.70 - 108,757.787) / 1913.70 = 859,000,107.173, where 108,757.787 represents the current BTC oracle price. This led to the GLP price being inflated to above $27, after which the attacker then redeemed the minted GLP at this inflated price. Initial Steps Taken As soon as this exploit was detected, we were notified by Hexagate, and trading on Avalanche was paused, which prevented this attack from also occurring on Avalanche. In addition to security partners, Arbitrum, exchanges, bridges, Circle, Tether, and Frax were contacted to assist with the tracking and freezing of the stolen funds. A message was also sent on-chain to establish contact with the exploiter: https://arbiscan.io/tx/0x92a39e66e54aff033cd7b41b468de7891cf459593495d68d78099cc889547380. GMX V2 was reviewed, to assess whether a similar vulnerability might exist. The same issue does not exist for GMX V2, as the calculation of the short average price occurs in the same contract where the order is executed. GMX V1 had separate contracts due to the Vault contract not being updatable, while in GMX V2, the contracts can be updated using a Timelock. Out of an abundance of caution, the minting caps for the GM liquidity tokens of GMX V2 on Arbitrum and Avalanche were reduced when the exploit occurred, so that minting new tokens was restricted in most liquidity pools. The caps have now been lifted after determining the root cause and confirming that this issue does not exist in GMX V2. Next Steps 1. There is currently ~$3.6m of tokens in the GLP pool; these tokens have been reserved due to the currently open positions 2. There is also approximately $500k of fees in V1 for GLP on Arbitrum for this week. This amount is after subtracting the 30% of fees that have been automatically swapped to GMX, as part of the protocol’s fee distribution to stakers. These fees for GLP will be moved to the DAO treasury for reimbursement. 3. To ensure a fair distribution of the remaining funds, minting and redemption of GLP on Arbitrum will be disabled. The transaction to disable redemption of GLP on Arbitrum has been signalled and will be executed after the 24-hour Timelock delay has passed 4. Minting of GLP tokens on Avalanche will be disabled, but GLP redemptions on Avalanche will remain functional
